As part of this commitment, the College offers scholarships for students with special talents who, in turn, will make a significant contribution to the life of the College.

The scholarships, remitting up to 50% of tuition fees, are offered to students entering Years 7–12. The Principal’s Scholarship, offering full remission of tuition fees, is offered to outstanding students not currently enrolled at the College.

Music

Music Scholarships, remitting up to 50% of tuition fees*, are offered to students entering Years 7-12. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding musical ability. Scholarships are offered on the basis of an audition and a subsequent interview with the Principal.

Years 7-9

Students entering Years 7–9 must demonstrate sound academic ability and should be approximately Grade Three AMEB or Trinity College standard.

Scholarships will be awarded for the duration of the student’s Secondary schooling and will be subject to an annual review. It is expected that musicians awarded a scholarship will:

  • Demonstrate ongoing development, technically and musically. For example, completing one AMEB or Trinity College (or equivalent) practical exam per year.
  • Participate in two co-curricular ensembles (which may involve a second instrument or voice).
  • Consider Music as part of their academic studies.

Years 10–12

Students entering Years 10-12 must demonstrate sound academic ability and would be considered based on a realised potential evidenced by a minimum standard consistent with Grade Six AMEB or Trinity College (or equivalent).

Scholarships will be awarded for the duration of the student's secondary schooling and will be subjected to an annual review.

It is expected that musicians awarded a scholarship will:

  • Demonstrate ongoing development, technically and musically. For example, completing one AMEB or Trinity College (or equivalent) practical exam per year.
  • Participate in two co-curricular ensembles (which may involve a second instrument or voice).
  • Consider Music as part of their academic studies.

In addition, a recipient of a Music Scholarship would be required to:

  • Be prepared to perform as a soloist at College functions.
  • Be prepared to attend and take part in Music workshops and camps as organised by the College.
  • Prioritise College music activities before other music commitments.
  • Be prepared to work within the ethos of the College with others less able or musically developed than themselves.
  • Demonstrate leadership within the College and community. For example, assisting conductors during rehearsals, assisting other musicians, wearing the school and performance uniforms appropriately.

At the time of online registration, the following documentation will need to be uploaded:

  • Most recent school report;
  • Most recent NAPLAN results;
  • Supporting documents pertaining to the applicant's musical ability;
  • Written references from the applicant’s instrumental or vocal teacher/s;
  • A copy of the applicant’s most recent music examination report/s.

Based on the documentation provided in the application form and the criteria outlined above, selected applicants will be invited to attend an audition. The auditions will take about 15 minutes and applicants will be required to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice, one of which may be on a second instrument. Applicants must provide their own accompanists, if required. As well as performing, applicants may be required to read at sight and complete a brief aural test, which will be followed by an interview with the audition panel. After the auditions, short-listed candidates and their parents will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal. Scholarship winners will be announced in September following this process.

Sport

Sport Scholarships, remitting up to 50% of tuition fees*, are offered to students entering Years 7-12. Applicants for the Sport Scholarship must demonstrate sound academic ability along with outstanding performance in the field of sport (including chess or debating). Preference is given to sports which are played at Flinders. Applicants are also to show evidence of broad involvement across school life.

At the time of online registration, the following documents will need to be uploaded:

  • Most recent school report;
  • Most recent NAPLAN results;
  • Supporting documentation for the applicant’s areas of excellence including levels of achievement, eg State or National level for sport, or the equivalent level of participation or competition in chess/debating;
  • Supporting documentation showing evidence of broad involvement across school life;
  • Two references relevant to the areas of excellence including the contact details of the referees.

Short-listed applicants and their parents will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal. Scholarship recipients will be announced in September following this process.

The Principal’s Scholarship

(open to new students only – means tested)

The Principal’s Scholarship, offering full remission of tuition fees*, is offered to an outstanding student not currently enrolled at the College. The winner will be selected, at the Principal’s discretion, from the following scholarship categories: Music or Sport.

*Note: Full fee paying overseas students are not eligible to apply for the Principal's Scholarship.

The Principal’s Scholarship also covers the Textbook and Resource Levy, Technology Levy and Mobile Device Fee but excludes other charges, for example, subject levies, optional tours, excursions and sports/music fees. The scholarship will be awarded for the duration of the student’s Secondary schooling, and will be subject to an annual review. The awarding of this scholarship will be at the Principal’s discretion.

To apply, the applicant must:

  • Be an external student not currently enrolled at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, and who, due to financial constraints, would not normally be able to consider a Flinders education.
  • The applicant’s family must be prepared to complete a financial statement. This will include disclosure, in strict confidence, of the family’s financial situation.
  • The applicant must first apply online for the Music and/or Sport Scholarships.

Flinders Foundation Scholarship

(open to new students only – means tested)

The Foundation Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student not currently enrolled at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, and will cover a minimum of 50% remission of the recipient’s tuition fees for up to a the three year period subject to an annual review of his/her academic progress, and overall contribution to the life of the College. 

The Principal may nominate a suitable applicant, from the existing scholarship applicant pool, to be interviewed for the Foundation Scholarship at the approval of the Foundation Board interview panel.

* Note: up to 50% of local student tuition fees.

Applications for the Music, Sport, Principal's and Foundation Scholarships close 9:00am on Monday, 12 August 2024. No late applications will be accepted. The selection of scholarship recipients will be determined through a College-administered process. Scholarships will be offered for the duration of the student’s Secondary schooling (subject to annual review).

Can I submit a late scholarship application?

Scholarships are open from January to March each year for Academic and General Excellence Scholarships. Applications for Music and Sport Scholarships open in July and close in August. The College believes that the process is fair for all and the open period enables all applicants during that period the chance to put their best claim forward. Scholarships are highly sought after and the College acknowledges the process enables equitable consideration of candidates. Due to the integrity of the scholarships process, the College is unable to offer any special considerations.

Applicants who are shortlisted for the Academic and General Excellence Scholarships will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal in Term 1. Short-listed applicants for the Music and Sport Scholarships will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal in Term 3. Scholarship winners will be announced in April/May and September and unsuccessful candidates will be advised in writing. Details of their results will be included.
