For the fourth year in a row, Matthew Flinders Anglican College has achieved first place in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) District Athletics Carnival.
Sixty young athletes ages 9 to 12 years in the Flinders Primary School competed in the event held at the University of the Sunshine Coast's world-class athletics track and field facilities on Tuesday, 25 July 2023.
Flinders Head of Primary Sport, Mr Andrew Robertson said, "Every one of our students who competed gave their absolute best, and there were so many wonderful results and improved performances.
"Their collective efforts contributed to Flinders achieving first place by a convincing 600 points, ahead of 10 independent schools in the region," Mr Robertson said.
"What's more, Flinders had six age champions and there were three students who set records!
"To support our students in the lead-up to this event, we've hosted a weekly lunchtime athletics training session over five weeks.
"It's been wonderful to see the students' motivation and commitment to growing their skills in long jump, high jump, shot put and discus.
"We thank local athletics coach Richard Franklin who offered his services as a Level 4 coach to teach our students some new skills to improve their throwing and jumping.
"We also thank our Flinders staff team of Miss Linda Donald, Mr Nathan Thomson and Mrs Natalie Elcoate for their work and care behind the scenes with administration and lunchtime coaching to make it all happen."
