It was an exciting opportunity to shine on stage for 609 of our avid student musicians at Matthew Flinders Anglican College when they performed in the 2022 Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod, held from 29 July to 13 August.
The College Music Department’s incredible music teachers, conductors, accompanists and Friends of Music parent volunteers supported the budding musicians to prepare for their performances.
Each student embraced the challenge to build their performance confidence and skills on stage.
The College was represented by students in the following event sections and with many placings achieved (see awards listed below):
- 8 entries in the Large Ensemble section with a total of 297 students performing
- 150 entries in the Solo, Duet, Trio and Quartet items with 195 students performing
- 14 entries in the Small Ensembles section (up to 12 performers) with 117 students performing
There were many awards received by our students, individually and in their groups and ensembles:
- 1st placings: 29 awarded to Flinders
- 2nd placings: 25 awarded to Flinders
- 3rd placings: 22 awarded to Flinders
- Highly Commended placings: 27 awarded to Flinders
This includes placings in the 10 Championship sections, where Flinders students impressively achieved in nine sections. There were 23 students awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Highly Commended Championships awards.
The College’s Performance Centre was one of the main venues for the Eisteddfod, which has been held annually since 1967 and is run by community volunteers including Flinders’ valued music teachers, Mrs Jenny Thomas and Mr John Thomas.
Each year, the event has more than 6,000 entries from students up to 18 years of age from across the Sunshine Coast who perform in 150 different items ranging from solos, duets, trios/quartets, small ensembles and large ensembles.
