Pancakes on school arrival, live music at lunchtime, scavenger hunts, sprint races in shark suits and slushy machines – Matthew Flinders Anglican College is putting the ‘fun’ in fundraising with its annual ‘Flinders Colours for a Cause’ campaign from Monday, 13 May to Saturday, 18 May.
The week-long event is designed and run by the College’s Year 12 Prefects with the support of the Captains of the eight College Houses to raise funds for Little Windmills, a local charity which financially assists families who have children who are seriously sick, injured or have special needs.
As part of the fundraiser, a group of Senior students are also hosting the Flinders Charity Car Wash on Saturday, 18 May from 8am to 11am at the Flinders Early Learning Centre (FELC) carpark at 144 Ballinger Road. Locals are urged to bring their cars for a spruce up at the price of $10 per car.
Colours for a Cause encourages all students and staff in the Secondary School to get involved in activities on campus each day during the event week, and demonstrates to the students how fun, inclusive and rewarding fundraising can be.
Last year, Flinders Secondary School students, staff and parents donated more than $14,000 to The Board Meeting local charity raised through the 2023 Colours for a Cause campaign.
Mr Duncan Greenbank, the Flinders Head of Senior School, said it was wonderful to see the Flinders Seniors so excited to step up as leaders and encourage their peers to support a worthy charity.
“As our Year 12 students prepare to graduate and explore their own study and lives beyond our College gates, it is important they develop the skills, confidence and capacity to lead in the wider community and make a positive impact,” Mr Greenbank said.
“Our annual Colours for a Cause fundraiser is driven entirely by our Seniors and brings our whole Secondary School together to fundraise, this year for the Little Windmills in their amazing efforts to support children who are doing it tough.”
There is also a major event at lunchtime on Wednesday, 15 May where 15 students will cut or shave their hair to raise money for Little Windmills. The cut hair will be donated to Sustainable Salons to be made into wigs for people suffering from cancer and other medically-induced hair-loss conditions.
Maria Faulder, the owner of Suite Three Hair in Buderim, and her team will visit the campus to cut the hair, as they have generously been involved in the projects at Flinders for many years.
The Seniors look forward to tallying up the funds raised throughout Colours for a Cause, and announcing the grand total by the end of May.
