It was an early start today for our World Environment Day breakfast hosted by our Year 12 Prefects.
Parents, teachers and students enjoyed a delicious breakfast featuring fresh ingredients from the Flinders Farm - thanks to Farmer Jeff and Chef Quenten!
The College's half-hectare Farm proudly produces nutrient-dense, pesticide- and fungicide-free food, all based on regenerative agriculture principles.
With the help of our Year 9 Agricultural Science students, and under the expert guidance of Farmer Jeff and our Secondary Teaching staff, the Farm’s enterprises have grown over the past five years to be an impressive example of sustainability in action.
The Farm features a 900m2 citrus orchard, 500m2 of vegetable beds, 14 bee hives (11 European and 3 native bee hives), poultry for eggs, a compost-making facility and a biofertiliser-making facility.
The World Environment Breakfast event was hosted by Prefects Dougie M and Hugo T who led an insightful Q&A with our Old Flinderian panel - Jessica Henderson-Wilson (Class of 2002) a Certified Environmental Practitioner, and Harry Clark (Class of 2010) a Senior Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology.
Jessica and Harry kindly shared valuable insights into their careers, and took some tricky weather questions from our curious Year 5 guests!
Some of the key takeaways from the session were that you don’t have to be scientist to work in the environment, the importance of collaboration and communication, and every small effort counts.
Thanks to our Prefects, Year 12 leaders, and our fantastic alumni panel for an enlightening event and for sharing how we can help care for our planet for future generations.
