Friendly sports rivalry is alive and well between Matthew Flinders Anglican College and the Rockhampton Grammar School with the launch of the inaugural Anthony Vincent Cup.
The first Cup event was held at the Flinders Sports Centre on Monday, 3 May with a girls netball match featuring the two school’s Firsts teams - with the Flinders First VII victorious.
Among the spectators on the court sidelines was Anthony Vincent and wife, Margaret as honoured guests.
The Cup was established to celebrate Anthony Vincent's enormous commitment to and unwavering support for the Co-curricular Sports Programs at both schools.
Anthony was Principal at Flinders from 1999 to 2013, and Deputy Principal at Rockhampton Grammar from 1988 to 1999.
The Anthony Vincent Cup will be contested each time the two schools compete at a First team level across any sport.
The Flinders First VII will go down in history after winning the inaugural match, with their team name the first to be recorded on the Cup plate.
Reflection by Flinders Principal, Stuart Meade
Flinders Principal Stuart Meade announced the Cup with the support of Dr Phillip Moulds, Headmaster at the Rockhampton Grammar School.
"Anthony had a significant influence on both schools through his caring leadership and all-round commitment,” Stuart said.
“To recognise his service and overall contribution to the development of both Rockhampton Grammar and Flinders is right and proper. His legacy is enduring, and this is one small way to recognise that."
Anthony Vincent's contribution
Anthony’s presence on the sidelines across the depth and breadth of the Co-Curricular Programs was admired by students and parents of both his schools and visitors alike.
While he was known for his booming vocal support from the sidelines when Flinders teams competed, Anthony taught and placed the utmost importance on values such as:
- sportsmanship
- respect for the game and the opposition, and
- acknowledgement of outstanding play by all involved.
Indeed, Anthony is revered as an inspiring leader by past pupils and parents of both schools. Matthew Flinders Anglican College's floodlit sporting oval has also been christened the Anthony Vincent Oval in his honour.
