Flinders’ parents are invited to a seminar on Wednesday, 9 November from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Grammar Hall with Mr Paul Dillon from the Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia (DARTA).
Paul is passionate about ensuring the community has access to accurate and up-to-date alcohol and other drug information. He has been working in the area of drug education for more than 25 years. In this seminar he will explore a variety of topics for parents of teenage children, including partying, alcohol, vaping and other drugs.
Flinders is co-hosting this evening seminar with Sunshine Coast Grammar School to equip parents and carers with the latest research and information to support their children in making healthy decisions as they grow into young adults.
On Tuesday, 8 November, Paul will be visiting Flinders to speak with our Year 10 and Year 11 students in separate presentations during the day and with our Secondary School staff after school.
He will share a range of research-informed strategies for students and that teachers and schools can use to promote the positive relationships and supportive environments that best support young people's health and wellbeing.
These wellbeing workshops are valued by Flinders, as a caring College community, to support its students to develop as informed citizens who are attuned to their environment, take responsibility for themselves and their actions, and serve their community.
Paul has worked extensively with a range of sporting organisations, including the Australian Cricketers Association, the Rugby Union Players Association and the Football Federation of Australia to provide training workshops to elite athletes on a range of alcohol and other drug issues.
In 2009 he published his best-selling book for parents ‘Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs’ which has since been released internationally and translated into a number of languages.
Paul regularly provides media comment and is regarded as a key social commentator in Australia, appearing on a wide range of television programs including Sunrise, TODAY and The Project.
This is a free event and open to the public. However, registration is essential.
