After treating the Sunshine Coast to a mesmerising concert last year, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is back at Matthew Flinders Anglican College to present “Dreams and Stories” on Saturday, 10 August 2024.
Flinders will proudly present the masterful QSO in the Flinders Performance Centre from 7:30pm to 9:00pm ahead of their Brisbane QPAC show later in the month.
The QSO invites audiences to prepare to be transported worlds away, as dreams and stories unfurl in spellbinding musical moments.
At the heart of this concert is Peter Sculthorpe’s Kakadu – a vivid reflection on the changing of seasons, and the powerful cycle of life and death so integral to the land. Digeridoo virtuoso William Barton will breathe rhythm and life into this now iconic Australian work.
Magic shimmers in the fluttering passages of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, before John Williams’ music from Harry Potter whisks you away into the realm of witches and wizards.
Stravinsky’s radiant Firebird Suite will erupt with a kaleidoscope of orchestral colour.
Tickets are on sale now and open to the public at https://www.trybooking.com/CSNWQ
The concert features rising charismatic Austrian conductor, Katharina Wincor who is a force on the podium and quickly establishing an international reputation.
Wincor’s recent highlights include guest engagements with ensembles such as Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Grazer Philharmoniker, Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony and Utah Symphony.
The QSO is also bringing their SidebySide program to the College as part of their commitment to playing alongside young musicians and seeking to inspire their creativity and ambition.
The SidebySide program will enable talented music students at Flinders to audition for places to go on stage and practise with the QSO in preparation for performing the final music piece with the orchestra that evening.
Flinders has a robust curriculum and co-curricular Music Program for its students from Prep to Year 12 with more than 650 music students developing their music and vocal skills across more than 15 ensembles.
Flinders is honoured to be hosting the QSO in its Flinders Performance Centre, a state-of-the-art professional venue with strong acoustics.
The Flinders Performance Centre features sufficient space to accommodate the ensemble of 64 musicians on the raised stage, providing the audience with a clear and impressive view of the Orchestra in action.
