A new purpose-built Science Lab has been created in the Primary School to equip students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College with a solid foundation in scientific knowledge and critical thinking.
The Lab will be run by specialist Science Teacher, Mr Gary Brimblecome, who will inspire our Primary students from Years 3-6 while providing tailored support to our Prep–Year 2 teachers. Gary studied Teaching (Chemistry and HPE) and Majored in Biology, and has worked in leading schools across NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
We asked Gary to share his vision and experience in this Q&A profile.
Q: Gary, what vision do you have for your role?
I have several years of experience teaching Senior Biology and Chemistry, which has fuelled my passion for science education. My aim is to strengthen the Primary School’s Science Program by equipping students with foundational knowledge and critical-thinking skills. The aim is to foster an environment of curiosity and academic excellence in Science.
Q: What do you enjoy about working in a school?
I find joy in the meaningful connections formed with students, colleagues and the wider school community. There is an immense sense of fulfilment in helping shape students’ futures, seeing them grow academically and personally. By fostering curiosity and resilience, schools become vibrant spaces where young minds can truly flourish.
Q: What are you looking forward to about your new role?
I am excited to enrich the learning experience in the Flinders Primary School, laying a strong foundation that students can build upon in their senior years. My goal is to foster scientific literacy, encourage inquiry and instil a lifelong love of learning. I look forward to guiding students as they expand their scientific skills and confidence.
Q: Please share some of your background?
I grew up in Wangaratta, Victoria and actively participated in many sports, including AFL and basketball. I studied Teaching at Ballarat University (HPE and Chemistry) and Charles Sturt University (K-12 Major in Biology), with my teaching career beginning at Macquarie Anglican Grammar School in Dubbo, NSW. In 2019, I moved to the Sunshine Coast and worked at St Paul’s School in Bald Hills, delivering Senior Biology, Science, Mathematics, and Health and Physical Education. Most recently, I taught Senior Biology and Chemistry at Caloundra City Private School and also led the STEM program in the Primary School.
Q: How are you enjoying the Sunshine Coast?
My partner and I arrived at the end of 2019. We have always loved the Sunshine Coast and the coastal lifestyle. I enjoy fishing, surfing, running, cycling and exploring the outdoors with my two border collies. One of my favourite spots is the Twin Waters dog beach, where I often take my dogs for a swim and to play catch with a frisbee.
Q: Please share a helpful piece of advice you have received.
I often reflect on a quote by Sir Ken Robinson: “Creativity is as important as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” His work taught me the power of education in nurturing students’ unique passions and talents. Embracing this perspective has shaped my teaching philosophy, reminding me to foster curiosity, creativity and personal growth in every learner.
