Year 9 Music EDGE

Course Description

The Year 9 Music EDGE program builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the Year 8 Music EDGE program, and is designed to accelerate students who are refining their musicianship and musicality, and aiming for mastery. Like the Year 8 course, it provides the opportunity to develop and extend these skills in a challenging environment with like-minded students. The course is designed to allow students to progress at a faster rate than is possible within the core Music program. Completion of this course provides a strong foundation for entry to the Year 10 Music elective.

In this unit, you will work on a large-scale project that authors music for a children’s storybook. You will work in small groups to compose music to work alongside and support the narrative of the story, drawing from the instrumentation available within the class group. You will work collaboratively in and between groups to compose, refine and reflect upon your compositional choices and the effectiveness of your decisions. You will workshop your compositional ideas as part of small class-based ensembles, document your process and procedures, successes and challenges, and reflect upon your contributions. Their work is presented as part of the ‘Stories in Music’ event, whereby a class ensemble plays the scores to a digitised projection, accompanied by a live narration of the story, for an audience.
