"Our Middle School for Years 7-9 is an exciting, caring and empowering place where students develop the confidence they need to successfully learn and grow.
"Adolescents of this age have the need for purpose, independence and success and as such, our Middle School practices are collaborative, outcome-based and centred on the learner.
"Year 7 is a popular intake year at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, with approximately 30 new students welcomed into our school community.
"Along with the students graduating from Flinders’ Senior Primary campus, we aim to support new students with a smooth and gradual transition into our Secondary School.”
Mr Sam Huckstep, Head of Middle School
Year 7 Precinct
The Year 7 students at Flinders are able to enjoy the Year 7 Precinct – a welcoming, modern and aspirational space for students to gather and settle into the Secondary School campus. The Precinct was revitalised in 2020 as part of the Flinders Masterplan.
An impressive facility, the precinct provides our Year 7s with flexible and innovative indoor learning spaces as well as dedicated outdoor learning areas to encourage collaboration and creativity.
The Year 7 Precinct also provides a positive environment for students' health and wellbeing with plenty of natural light and connection with the outdoors. Students and staff enjoy the views from the classrooms and balconies over the beautiful Anthony Vincent Oval and surrounding rainforest.
Broader Subject Opportunities
At Flinders, Middle School is an opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zone and explore new subjects and co-curricular opportunities to uncover hidden talents.
Students are gently guided through their first year of Secondary, experiencing a blend of core and specialist subjects, such as IDEAS (Innovation, Design, Engineering, Arts, Science), Japanese, French, Health and Physical Education, Religious and Values Education, Drama, and Music.
The Year 7 students have an exciting academic journey in Middle School, with a brand new curriculum in Year 9, known as The Year to RISE. Flinders launched the signature program in 2022, aimed at sparking curiosity, inviting inquiry and spurring innovation.
The research behind the Year to RISE is underpinned by Self-Determination Theory, which outlines three basic needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence – all designed to support the ultimate goal of self-motivated and engaged learners.
Students in Year 7 and throughout Secondary School are also encouraged to embrace the extensive co-curricular opportunities, to explore their passions and spark new interests while learning leadership skills and building friendships. Clubs and group activities are offered across sport, music, the creative arts, community service, languages, academic enrichment and more.
Teacher Commitment and Care
Our teachers have a genuine care and passion for teaching students of this age, developed further by the College’s distinct pastoral focus. Students are grouped in mixed ability core classes with a Homeroom Mentor who teaches them for either Maths and Science or English and Humanities.
The Mentor also delivers the Personal Development curriculum (REACH), ensuring a supportive relationship is developed with each student. This structure enables our Year 7 students to see their core teachers for more than 50% of the allocated lessons in their timetable, allowing them to develop a strong bond with the core teaching team.
Year 7 Camp Experience
Typically in the first week of Year 7, students embark on a local beach camp for a team building experience where the express purpose is to have fun, get to know and trust their peers and teachers, and build new friendships. The goal is for students to commence the school year feeling a sense of belonging, care and connectedness to their school and to each other as a cohort.
The Year 7 Intake at Flinders
The intake process for Year 7 commences at the start of each year. New students are invited to an Information Evening in Term 1 where they will hear from teachers, as well as current Flinders students, about Year 7 and the Middle School.
Interviews commence in Term 1 and continue throughout the year. A further Information Evening is held in Term 3 for all Year 6 Flinders students, and new students.
The Year 7 Orientation Day is held at the end of Term 4 with all students spending a morning in the Secondary School, familiarising themselves with the campus and routines. Year 7s also attend the Induction Day in January.
